  7. Live with it

A quarter-century ago, when I began work on the copy desk of The Baltimore Sun, I was still a hard-edged prescriptivist (though not quite as great an insufferable usage snob as when I was a graduate student in English). I knew people who thought that...

  11. Cockpit in Court's 'Sunset Boulevard' ready for its close-up

Andrew Lloyd Webber's1993 Broadway musical adaptation of Billy Wilder's "Sunset Boulevard" sets itself the impossible task of trying to emulate that great 1950 movie. Although this musical doesn't come close, its distillation of that inside-Hollywood story and Webber's film noir-tinged melodic score capture enough of the movie's essence to make for an enjoyable evening at Cockpit in Court Summer Theatre.

  13. Weekend filled with choices for music lovers

The classical music calendar is covered with notes in Howard County this weekend. That's because there are several local concerts scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, March 17 and 18. Much as music lovers might like to be in two places at the same time, they'll have to make some tough choices when it comes to choosing between overlapping events.

Long runs of two long-awaited shows - Baltimore's first engagement of Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera and the Mid-Atlantic premiere of Disney's The Lion King - will highlight a musical-laden 2004-2005 subscription season at the Hippodrome Theatre.
