3. New Riders of the Purple Sage Perform at FTC's StageOne in Fairfield on March 16

The New Riders of the Purple Sage got their start when songwriter John Dawson and fledgling pedal steel player Jerry Garcia teamed up to play some country music in coffee shops. Later that year lead guitarist John Nelson joined them, and before too long they had a full band supplemented by other Grateful Dead members Phil Lesh and Mickey Hart. While on the Festival Express tour across Canada, alongside acts like Janis Joplin, the Band and the Flying Burrito Brothers (and the Dead), they recruited pedal steel player Buddy Cage from the group Ian and Sylvia to replace an increasingly-busy Garcia. Dawson passed away in 2009, but Nelson and Cage are still at it today with a new set of bandmates. They'll be at Fairfield Theatre Company's StageOne Saturday night to play cowboy tunes like "Panama Red" that hearken back to the days of American Beauty-era psychedelic country music.

  5. Dangermuffin Plays StageOne in Fairfield on March 9

Dangermuffin is a three-piece band from South Carolina that plays that down-home, old-timey Americana that's so popular these days, but blended with reggae, folk and even calypso. They've got beards, look scruffy and wield acoustic guitars. They're coming to StageOne Saturday on a tour that spans the East Coast from Massachusetts down to Florida. The band's latest album Olly Oxen Free is making a mark in the Roots Country charts produced by Roots Music Report and they hope to expand their audience on the festival circuit this summer.

  7. Stephen Kellogg Plays a Solo Show at FTC's StageOne in Fairfield on Dec. 27

For about a decade, Stephen Kellogg and the Sixers have been touring exhaustively, building their fanbase to a point where they can sell out large clubs all over the country. They saw there was a gap in their touring and recording schedule and figured it would be an appropriate time to go on hiatus for a bit and rest up. So that's what they're doing. In the meantime, Kellogg returns home (he's a local boy) to the Fairfield Theatre Company's StageOne for a stop on his "Alone for the Holidays Tour" in which he'll keep the music going without his usual cast of characters.

  15. Rebirth Brass Band performs at StageOne in Fairfield on June 23 & 24

They started out playing the streets of New Orleans' French Quarter in 1983. Now they're a worldwide touring institution. Rebirth Brass Band combines traditional brass band sounds with a more modern, heavy and funky groove. They call it "junk music," a blend of jazz and funk. Hear it two nights in a row, on both Saturday and Sunday at Fairfield Theatre Company's StageOne.

  21. Toots and the Maytals play at StageOne in Fairfield on March 26

For my money, Toots Hibbert is the greatest reggae singer of all time. He oozes soul without even trying, causing crowds to sway back and forth to his irresistable Jamaican rhythms. He returns to StageOne, with his Maytals, for a Monday night dance fest that will make you forget that it's the most hated of all weeknights. "Pressure Drop." "5446 Was My Number." "Sweet and Dandy." Incredible songs, all of them. Hear them sung tonight by the master himself.
