  3. Cockpit in Court's 'Sunset Boulevard' ready for its close-up

Andrew Lloyd Webber's1993 Broadway musical adaptation of Billy Wilder's "Sunset Boulevard" sets itself the impossible task of trying to emulate that great 1950 movie. Although this musical doesn't come close, its distillation of that inside-Hollywood story and Webber's film noir-tinged melodic score capture enough of the movie's essence to make for an enjoyable evening at Cockpit in Court Summer Theatre.

  5. When it comes to Baltimore, Travolta does it his way

John Travolta knew what he wanted to do with the role of Edna Turnblad, the zaftig housewife at the center of "Hairspray." The movie's producers, however, weren't so sure.
John Travolta knew what he wanted to do with the role of Edna Turnblad, the zaftig housewife at the center of "Hairspray." The movie's producers, however, weren't so sure. Especially when he insisted on using a Bawlamer accent. "I got fought on it, by...

  7. Olympics opening ceremony makes for fine prime-time TV event

What plays well in a stadium doesn't always work so well on TV.
    The Baltimore Sun
What plays well in a stadium doesn't always work so well on TV. But if the in-person thumbs-up reviews out of London Friday were accurate, the opening ceremonies of the Summer Olympics were a winner on both fronts. By and large, the version shown for...

  9. Barbara Cook is still glowing at 85

Barbara Cook approaches a song from the inside out, judging the weight of each measure, the point behind each word in a lyric. So when she sings, she starts from a place where there's nothing but truth. No artifice, no exaggeration, no self-aggrandizing flourish.

  15. 'Grease' slides down easily at Toby's Baltimore Dinner Theatre

A summer night at the theater seems like just the right occasion to hear the song "Summer Nights" in "Grease." It's the kind of show that can be enjoyed in any season, of course, but it's so light and silly that it's especially welcome at this time of year. Toby's Baltimore Dinner Theatre rises to that occasion with an energetic production.
