  1. Consider a gift from the World Vision Catalog

This time of year, there are many reminders of why we should be thankful, and for many of us that means thinking of what presents we can get for our loved ones. But have you ever sat in a room full of gifts thinking, ‘How could I make this a more meaningful experience?’

  5. A return to glamour as usual at award shows

    Times Senior Fashion Writer
If there's a new, more restrained mood in Hollywood, the most telling evidence of it will appear in the clothes that are paraded along the red carpet at Sunday's Golden Globes awards ceremony. Since November, when Emmy Award participants were asked to...

  8. Critic's picks: It's fun to be stuck in 'The Middle'

"<strong>The Middle"</strong> -- Too long have the hilarious and down-rent relatable Hecks lived in the shadow of their upscale-yet-seeming-unemployed neighbors on"Modern Family." Patricia Heaton's Frankie and Neil Flynn's Mike remind us on a weekly basis that fatigue and bewilderment are the real resting states of family life and their assorted children -- jock Axl (Charlie McDermott), sweet 'n' goofy Sue (Eden Sher) and oddball bookworm Brick (Atticus Shaffer) -- are the anti-Abercrombie kids most of us once were. The season finale will be chock full o' milestones, Axl graduates high school, Brick moves on to middle school and Sue tries to get her license, for the sixth time. <em>ABC, Wednesday, 8 p.m.</em>

  12. TV Picks: 'Family Tree,' 'Nashville,' '10 Buildings,' 'The Middle'

<strong>"Family Tree" (HBO, premieres Sunday).</strong> Christopher Guest has made you a TV series. Thank him. The director of "A Mighty Wind" and "Best in Show" and one of the forces behind and in "This Is Spinal Tap" -- in which he was Nigel Tufnel, whose amplifier went to 11 and whose guitar you were not to touch or even to look at -- Guest has been an architect of modern comedy, from the improvised dialogue that marks his films to the documentary style in which most have been shot. Its sound is his sound, its look his look. (Ricky Gervais owes him his career, if we are to consider that career based on "The Office"; "Parks &amp; Recreation" could almost be Guest's own work.) In the wonderful "Family Tree," hangdog Chris O'Dowd ("Bridesmaids," "The IT Crowd"), finding his life stalled after losing a girlfriend and a job in short order, goes in search of his roots and relatives. It's a trip that takes him into the theater, a boxing club, England's rural north, the back end of pantomime horse and finally to America. Michael McKean, a regular member of Guest's repertory company, plays Tom's father; Nina Conti his troubled ventriloquist sister. Jim Piddock, another Guest player, co-wrote the series and also appears in it, as Tom's antique-dealing downstairs neighbor. Familiar faces Fred Willard, Bob Balaban, Ed Begley Jr. and Amy Seimetz will also arrive in due time.

    The Philadelphia Inquirer
years, TV sitcoms perpetuated the stereotype of the bumbling, clueless dad. It's only recently that moms are getting the same rank treatment. From Lois (Jane Kaczmarek) in Malcolm in the Middle to Jules (Courteney Cox) in Cougar Town to Frankie Heck...
