  1. Howard Stern and 'America's Got Talent' a winning combination

I will admit it, I came to the season premiere of "America's Got Talent" to rip Howard Stern.
    The Baltimore Sun
I will admit it, I came to the season premiere of "America's Got Talent" to rip Howard Stern. But I walk away after two hours with nothing but admiration for Stern and the producers of this potent franchise. And I'm not simply praising AGT as a slick or...

For the second week in a row, Baltimore got some prime-time, Sunday-night love on high-end cable TV. Two weeks ago, Lutherville got a mention on "Mad Men." Granted, it was a throwaway line, but a mention is a mention in self-conscious Baltimore -- and...

  5. Sunday night TV is DVR overload

With the arrival last week of HBO's "VEEP," it is official: Sunday night TV is out of control, but in a good way.
With the arrival last week of HBO's "VEEP," it is official: Sunday night TV is out of control, but in a good way. Hard as might be to imagine in a medium that some characterize as having 10 million choices but nothing worth watching, Sunday nights now...

  7. Why it is wrong to call HBO's 'Girls' racist

I have been watching the backlash against HBO's groundbreaking comedy "Girls" the last couple of weeks, and much of it looks to be coming from writers and wannabe critics who might just be jealous of Lena Dunham's success.

  9. A first look at 'Mad Men's' season 5 opener

First off, as serious fans of"Mad Men"probably already know, creator Matthew Weiner sent a letter to critics with the screener for the season 5 opener, essentially asking them not to talk or write about anything of consequence in the two-hour opener that airs March 25.

  11. Who wins 'The Wire' vs 'The Sopranos'?

In a battle of the television behemoths, it came down to Baltimore versus New Jersey.
    The Baltimore Sun
In a battle of the television behemoths, it came down to Baltimore versus New Jersey. Or was it street thugs versus the mafia? Maybe was just Omar against Tony. In any event, the website Vulture.com has had some fun recently, March Madness style,...

  13. Like/dislike: Nick Prevas

Nick Prevas is truly an “artist of all trades.” The 30-year-old Charles Village resident writes and directs films, works on graphic design projects, plays guitar and sings in the band White Lodge. He even handles communications and media for the American Visionary Arts Museum. Originally from Highland, Prevas tells b that there’s no place he’d rather be than Baltimore: “There’s just an energy to our city like no place else. I lived in L.A. for a few years and couldn’t ever get the vibe there like I can in Charm City. There’s no pretense (most of the time), you can connect with genuinely creative and talented people and there’s some weird inspiration I get from living here that just can’t be put down in words.” Through that inspiration, Prevas creates film shorts and music videos that have been shown at festivals and galleries across the country. Most recently, he co-produced a video of artist Scott Weaver showing his 100,000+ toothpick sculpture, “Rolling Through the Bay,” which you can see looping in AVAM’s current exhibition “All Things Round.” On Saturday, Prevas will perform with White Lodge at the Windup Space in a tribute to Tom Waits. Here, he talks to us about Soul Cannon (who he created album art for), his dislike for romantic comedies and the ambiguity of fanny packs.

  23. Crazy for vintage: Old styles have new appeal at Ellicott City shop

When Maryland Public Television called Cindi Ryland last May to request models to attend a reception for its major donors, the owner of Retropolitan vintage clothing store took the request in stride. After all, she’s had them before. What took her breath away was that the evening’s special guests were to be award-winning film producer Ken Burns and his co-producer Lynn Novick stopping in Baltimore to preview their new documentary “Prohibition,” which will air Oct. 2-4 on public television.
