3. Alan Horn: Can Disney's new boss reinvent the studio?

24 Frames
The arrival of Alan Horn, who was unceremoniously pushed out of his Warners job in April 2011, is a game changer for Disney. It’s a sign that Iger, who has spent the last several years hiring (and then firing) untested executive talent, notably...

Snow White and the Huntsman

17. Nerd Nite

WHAT: Yeah, we know. We're a little suspicious, too. A social night for nerds? Is this a true celebration of our obsessions? Or is this a ploy by the cool kids to lure us out of the basement with the promise of costumed models, tunes by DJ Spank and all-night retro gaming? (Sega Genesis represent!) We keep hearing that nerds are cool and that we have nothing to fear now that Joss Whedon has enough money to buy the NFL. Yet the sinking feeling remains that sometime around last call, someone will hit the lights and we'll all get wedgies. Just in case, we'll go with our back-up plan: Drink until we get superpowers.

19. Movie Review: Marvel's The Avengers

When Stan Lee and Jack Kirby first created the super team they called “The Avengers”, I doubt that they could scarcely imagine the popularity it would enjoy today. Way back in 1964 when the title first debuted, Lee and Kirby were trying out a new formula when it came to superhero team-up books: create a book where the heroes didn’t always get along. Up until that point, namely in the more perfect universes of DC Comics' Superman and Batman, the caped crime fighters generally co-existed with very little drama. The Marvel Universe would differ, with the heroes having more three-dimensional personalities and the conflicts that they bring. That was the drama that readers of books like The Avengers, Fantastic Four or X-Men came to expect, a veritable soap opera with muscles and skin-tight spandex. It works rather well in comic books since the dialogue is at times heavy-handed and the costumes a bit bright, but not always in real life.
