  3. An Oscar mantra: Press to excess

    Los AngelesTimes
I was around a gaggle of movie people the other night who were all talking about the Oscars. That wouldn't be such an odd thing at this time of year, except for one thing: The awards themselves were something of an after-thought. Everybody was talking...

  5. It's elementary, Oscar

    LA Times Film Critic
Sherlock Holmes never tried his hand at Oscar prognosticating, but indications are he would have had a flair for it. "When you have eliminated the impossible," the great detective said, "whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth." As it...

  11. Classic Hollywood: The movies at work

As far back as Louis Lumière's 1895 "Workers Leaving the Lumiere Factory in Lyon" 46-second short, work has been a central theme in motion pictures.¶There have been stark dramas about officer workers as drones (King Vidor's 1928 "The Crowd"), satires (Charlie Chaplin's 1936 "Modern Times"), angry explorations of the hardships of unemployment (John Ford's 1940 "The Grapes of Wrath") and the dangers of certain occupations (Ford's 1941 "How Green Was My Valley" about miners) or political statements such as 1979's "Norma Rae," which examined the struggle to unionize a factory. More recent films such as 1999's "Office Space" have skewered the world of bored computer drones. ¶ So in honor of Labor Day, here are some of the best Hollywood films about the workplace, whether it's an office, a farm — or even the circus.

  15. Father and son, heart-rendingly on the road

Dan LeFranc's penchant for playing with time and memory within the confines of family life first got a local airing last year in "The Big Meal," which won raves in its world premiere with American Theater Company (a New York production at Playwrights Horizons closes April 29). In "Sixty Miles to Silver Lake," LeFranc takes us inside a father-son road trip that straddles the yellow lines of love, fear, resentment, and forgiveness as it shifts back and forth in chronological time.
