5. Despite complexities, summer heroes still find time to save the world

"It's not my war," says Shia LaBeouf's Sam in "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen." "I fear it soon will be," replies the heavy-hearted towering steel of Optimus Prime. And we know, in that moment, that despite his wish to be just an ordinary guy, Sam will become the reluctant warrior. For us, sacrifices will be made. The world will be made safe. We will be saved.

  7. Bizarro blockbusters

You've heard that Hollywood is a parallel universe? Virtually another world -- vaguely familiar yet removed from our own, governed by its own rules and morality? But did you know that within that universe exists <em class="i">another parallel universe -- a bizarro Hollywood, modeled on the larger Hollywood owned by Sony, Universal and DreamWorks? It is called the Asylum. It is a 13-year-old full-service B-movie assembly line of direct-to-video titles, and it is run by two mini-moguls with very large cojones.

  11. Loud and relentless, 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen' suffocates the senses

<img src="http://www.newsday.com/images/icons/1star.gif">The little-boy fantasy of cars coming to life and turning into giant talking robots from outer space plummets straight into the high-tech junkyard in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. It's so loud and relentless you feel you're in the center of a trash compactor. Although the movie goes all over the world to tell a rudimentary tale of good humans and good robots, or Autobots, uniting against the bad robots, or Decepticons, its frenetic and often pointless action induces a weird claustrophobia. The whirl, bang and general bother of crashing gears and gnashing metal ends up suffocating the senses.

Director Michael Bay has never been a critics' favorite, but the thrashing he received for <a href="http://www.transformersmovie.com">“Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” was the worst of his eight-film career. 21. 'Transformers': It's Big, It's Dumb And It Will Be Popular

As big, dumb summer "entertainments" go, they don't get much bigger or much dumber than " Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen." The briefly amusing mash-up/crunch-up of a couple of summers back has been recycled into an epic 2 1/2 hours of explosions, ponderous cartoon history, veiled racism and inept geography.
