1. Mark Duplass, that hard-working actor whose name you don't know

Barefoot and bleary-eyed, Mark Duplass opened the door to his office, an apartment in Los Feliz. "I feel like I'm stoned," the 35-year-old actor said, apologizing for his appearance and trying to wipe the sleep out of his eyes.

  5. Counterprogramming: Alternatives to regular summer movie fare

Summer brings no shortage of popcorn movies but some films this season are more like a fully satisfying meal. Consider these offerings — with casts young and old, settings foreign and home-grown, stories contemporary and period — which will linger in your memory long after the lights come up.

  7. 'A Little Bit of Heaven': Yep, she's unwell -- and really unlikable ✭ 1/2

Kate Hudson stars as an ad exec diagnosed with terminal cancer in "A Little Bit of Heaven," a romantic dramedy so full of tragic missteps it becomes almost perversely compelling. An only fitfully convincing Hudson leads a strong-on-paper cast, but most of the actors look uncomfortable here, particularly Gael Garcia Bernal as her love interest.

  15. Review: Cancer comedy 'A Little Bit of Heaven' a lot of hokum

To the cancer comedy subgenre we can add a new category: the colonoscopy rom-com, not likely to metastasize beyond "A Little Bit of Heaven." What Gael García Bernal, Kathy Bates, Treat Williams and Peter Dinklage saw in the material, one can only guess. But for leading lady Kate Hudson, the ill-conceived, blandly executed production is the latest in a long line of disappointing career choices, leaving fans of her eye-opening turn in "Almost Famous" still waiting for another role to showcase her range.
