  1. Emergency preparation for dialysis patients

Dialysis is a lifesaving treatment for those with kidney disorders. But during emergencies, particularly bad weather, sometimes patients don't want to go — or can't get to — their usual dialysis center. There are some steps patients can take to prepare, says Brandon Eck at the DaVita dialysis centers, who volunteers with the company's emergency response team, DaVERT.

  5. Good riddance to a disappointing year

Dear Year 2011: Goodbye and good riddance. Don't let the door hit you in the behind on your way out. Or, rather, let it hit you. You deserve it.

  7. Finally, some common sense about speed cameras

I was delighted to read your recent editorial in support of Maryland's speed cameras ("The purpose of speed cameras," Dec. 27), especially as it followed a column by Jay Hancock in which he departed from the genius that normally distinguishes his...

  9. Green movement's blues

As we head into the new year, America's environmental movement is stalled. The topic of climate change is anathema to the Republican presidential candidates, and the incumbent is tepid on the subject at best. The U.S. stands alone among industrialized nations, who all seem to be making progress in switching to alternative energy sources and reducing their carbon emissions. Germany is on track to obtain 80 percent of its energy from renewable sources by 2050; Denmark plans for 100 percent by the same date. China, it has been much reported, now leads the world in wind turbine production. The U.S., meanwhile, continues to give generous tax breaks to coal and oil companies. Despite the rancorous debate in Washington to reduce federal spending, those tax breaks merit hardly a mention at all.

  13. Bernard Pollard hopes the Giants thrash the Patriots

A day after the Ravens lost to the New England Patriots, 23-20, in the AFC championship game, Ravens strong safety Barnard Pollard revealed to the world -- well, a Houston radio station -- which team he will be pulling for in the Super Bowl on Feb. 5. I’ll give you a hint: It won’t be the team that beat the Ravens on Sunday.

  15. Friends, family, community offer touching farewell to WBAL's Ron Smith

Friends, family, fans and colleagues said a public farewell to WBAL radio show host Ron Smith Tuesday at Goucher College. And it was as powerful and moving in some respects as the way Smith, who died in December at age 70, lived his final weeks and months after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in October.

  21. Terrell Suggs, Tom Brady put feud on hold heading into Sunday's game

Throughout the season, it seemed as if Terrell Suggs was making a conscious effort to keep Tom Brady's name out of his mouth. While spouting out sound bites on other NFL quarterbacks, such as Ben Roethlisberger and Tim Tebow, on the Ravens' long road to the AFC championship game, the linebacker randomly tossed in vague references to his longtime nemesis from New England.

  23. Disgusted by GOP Know-nothings

After watching the Republican presidential primary debates, I have an urge to move to another country if any of these clowns win. The unapologetic racism shown by former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, and the loud clapping by the people of South Carolina,...
