Paula Abdul

Highlights
Paula Abdul

Paula Abdul went from being Janet Jackson's choreographer to achieving pop stardom with her string of hits from "Forever Your Girl." Her follow-up records did not perform as well, and she faded from the spotlight until 2002 when joined "American Idol." Abdul's quirky ways and bickering with fellow judge Simon Cowell often get more attention than the show's contestants. The show propelled Abdul back to stardom, and she's done several side projects, including her own reality show and jewelry collection. Show more »

  1. Why you should be watching 'The Voice'

We'd rather not think about the Super Bowl.
We'd rather not think about the Super Bowl. But after the Vince Lombardi Trophy is presented to Sunday's winner comes a championship contest we can really get behind: the premiere of the second season of "The Voice" on NBC. A different kind of talent...

  3. Anti-consumerism backlash loud, but inaudible over Black Thursday buzz

The fella who launched the petition to "save Thanksgiving" by trying to stop Target's midnight opening on Black Friday probably felt pretty good about his feel-good measure, which, ultimately, is what the petition amounted to. As it turns out, rallying...

Two area Maryland performers made it to the final 12 on Simon Cowell's talent competition "The X Factor." They are 18-year-old Paige Elizabeth, of Perry Hall, and 20-year-old Marcus Canty, of Bowie. Read a Sun interview I did with Elizabeth two weeks...

  9. 'The X-Factor': What you need to know before the premiere

Television just isn't the same without Simon Cowell. Whether you love or loathe him, there's little denying his impact on reality TV competitions and pop-culture in general. Cowell returns to the tube Wednesday night, when his beloved project (and outside-of-America phenomenon) "The X-Factor" comes to Fox at 8 p.m.

  11. 'The X-Factor' recap: A running diary of the first episode

THE SKINNY: Welcome to the world of "The X-Factor." From the start of Wednesday night's premiere, the "X" would take the foundations of "American Idol" — high drama, big lights and heartfelt stories — and build for the sky. This was an emotionally draining show, with stories of poor families, down-on-their-luck talents and even a meth-addict fresh out of rehab. If you feet that "Idol" has gotten stale in recent seasons (and it has, with its predictable guy-with-a-guitar winners), then "X-Factor" felt like a welcome reminder of just how great it feels to root for someone — someone perhaps trapped in a mundane life, just in need of the right break. It's the cliche American dream story, and you'd have to be pretty cold to roll your eyes at the way "The X-Factor" presents it. I'm feeling great after the first episode, so read my running diary to see how I got here:

  13. 'The X-Factor' recap: Can the second episode outdo the premiere?

THE SKINNY: Have we been had? "The X-Factor" followed up a seriously stellar debut with a two-hour mess of talentless singers and worse. The supporters of the first episode should be worried. Was Thursday night the real "X-Factor" or just a momentary bump in the road? A weak second episode paired with disappointing opening ratings is a situation Simon Cowell must not have anticipated. And yet, here we are.
