1. Film review: 'Jack the Giant Slayer' is an enjoyable fairytale

Earlier this year, I had the displeasure of reviewing "Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters."The R-rated update on the fairy tale made for one of the most miserable moviegoing experiences I've ever had in my life.

3. 'Jack the Giant Slayer': Five lessons from a box-office bomb

If it's March, it must be an effects-driven dud. Nearly a year after Disney's "John Carter" crashed to earth, bringing an executive down with it, a different fantasy-heavy film fell mightily at the box office this weekend.

9. Review: Nothing magic about 'Jack the Giant Slayer'

Pity poor Jack. There he was, minding his own business in some dusty fairy tale book when the powers that be dragooned him into active service as the front man for the would-be blockbuster "Jack the Giant Slayer."

11. Roots of some giant problems in 'Jack the Giant Slayer' ★★

Most modern fantasy adventures are distinguished, if that's the right word, by shot after shot of actors gaping at amazements — beanstalks busting out of the ground, for example, or flaming trees being flung as weapons at the king's castle — along with actors running away yelling "Look out!" or "Aaaggghhhhh!!!" while being pursued, say, by a digitally animated giant with two heads. The movies have been into such trickery across the medium's entire life span, back to Georges Melies. It's simply a matter of the method.

15. 'Jack the Giant Slayer' review: I miss Buffy

* (out of four)
* (out of four) Anna Faris stars in “Little Bo Peep: Wolf Exploder.” That sounds like a classic tale revision that would pick the right tone and actually deliver some fun. Until that movie actually exists, we’re left with “Jack...

17. 'Jack the Giant Slayer' director faced some towering challenges

When screenwriter Darren Lemke first proposed the idea of contemporizing the Jack and the Beanstalk fairy tale with CG technology, it was 2005. Tim Burton had not yet jumped into the rabbit hole with "Alice in Wonderland." Amanda Seyfried had yet to don the cape for "Red Riding Hood." Snow White had no Huntsman.
