Los Angeles Times Pop Music Critic
Beck’s vision recently got an infusion of luxury money, and he's used it in service of a good cause: creating a jumbo helping of David Bowie's "Sound and Vision." Over the last few years, the Los Angeles singer, songwriter and producer has been...

  3. Yanni speaks: World music icon talks about influences, the foibles of fame, and his future

    Lehigh Valley Music
In the 1990s, it seemed world-music artist Yanni could do no wrong. He sold more than 10 million copies of his albums in that decade. The DVD accompanying his 1994 disc “Yanni Live at the Acropolis” sold 6 million, making......

  5. A new age for New Age music

In late 2009, noise-pop group Animal Collective followed up its critics-poll-topping album "Merriweather Post Pavilion" with a stopgap EP, "Fall Be Kind." It generated buzz for featuring the first-ever licensed Grateful Dead sample, but what was more peculiar was a curlicue of pan flute woven into the song "Glaze" and credited to Gheorghe Zamfir. Zamfir, as the Romanian pan flute musician is best known, was a ubiquitous presence on television in the '80s, peddling wispy flute albums. For many people, it was one of the first sounds that came to be known by the label of New Age music.

  12. Yanni's favorite destination: Greece

Born in Kalamata, Greece, Yanni moved to the United States to attend the University of Minnesota when he was 18. Though he earned a degree in psychology, the self-taught musician decided to pursue music as his career. "I didn't know any better back then," he said with a laugh. "I'm not sure it was the best thing to do, but it was what I needed to do. I have always just loved music."

  14. All together now

You know a nation is in trouble when the worst epithet its citizens can hurl at each other is the title of a folk song: "Kumbaya," an African American spiritual whose name (and chorus) translates from the Gullah dialect as "come by here." It has had...

  16. Rock review, Dave Matthews Band at Soldier Field

    Tribune rock critic
Dave Matthews doesn't look like a rock star — his regular-guy charisma and casually rumpled appearance are more akin to a video-store clerk's. And his five-piece band doesn't sound like it belongs in a football stadium playing to 50,000 screaming fans; it...

  18. Look Greg, No Camera

I'd like to start off with an apology here to the guys in photo. I lost the camera you loaned to me. Well, not lost it, or replaced it, but it's missing from my knapsack, and I didn't notice it missing until Sunday night when Someone and I were walking...
