Contributor Lexie Mountain is an epic Van Halen fan, and has an epic review of Wednesday night's show at the Verizon Center. I have to admit: I was hoping for VAN HALEN-CON 2012. Sort of like Burning Man, but with a greater possibility of being set...

  9. Grammys 2013: An early look at the new artist contenders

When the nominations for the 55th Grammys are unveiled Wednesday night from Nashville, expect to see plenty of new faces dotted among the usual stars and heritage acts. With some superstar artists having missed the Sept. 30 eligibility cut-off with their latest albums -- including Taylor Swift's "Red" and Rihanna's "Unapologetic" -- a surprise or two should be able to sneak into the top Grammy categories.

  13. 'Young Goethe in Love': Portrait of the writer as a smitten swain — 3 1/2 stars

An unexpected treat, the freewheeling German biopic "Young Goethe in Love" isn't much more interested in adhering to the historical record than was "Amadeus" or "Shakespeare in Love," but … actually, there is no "but." That's merely a fact. Facts are overrated commodities in the matter of cinematic portraiture.

  17. Concert review: Van Halen at the BankAtlantic Center, April 10, 2012

A Van Halen fan doesn’t need a reason to forget the name Sammy Hagar, but the reconstituted version of the band that played last night at Sunrise’s BankAtlantic Center offered plenty of them, anyway, and certainly no less than 22, the combined number of old and new songs the group performed in a bracingly loud, fleetingly nostalgic set that topped two hours. With original frontman David Lee Roth back at the microphone, Van Halen did its best to close the 28-year gap between “1984,” the last album the band cut with Roth before replacing him with the aforementioned Hagar, and “A Different Kind of Truth,” the surprisingly solid reunion album it released earlier this year. It didn’t play a single song from its post-Roth era.

  19. Producer of Disney's 'The Lion King' continues trek into nature with 'Chimpanzee'

It’s a long way from the comforts of Burbank to the wilds of the remote Ivory Coast in Africa, and Don Hahn, executive producer of Disneynature’s new film, “Chimpanzee,” laughs at the comparison. “Luckily for me, I got to stay home and sit in warm edit suites right here in Burbank looking at this amazing footage our filmmakers shot,” says the congenial producer.

  21. Concert review: Van Halen at the United Center

Van Halen was pretty much all business Friday at the sold-out United Center, and that’s saying something when that eternal hedonist, David Lee Roth, is involved.
