  1. Mac Miller hits No. 1 without help from radio or a major label

    How did Mac Miller do it?
    How did Mac Miller do it? It seems improbable, but the party-all-the-time Jewish rapper from Pittsburgh found himself at the top of the Billboard 200 on Nov. 16, without a radio hit, and more important, without a major-label machine there to take the...

    Watch the video for "Loud" above. His raps have curse words and drug references in them. Kids, be careful! I've been duped by Mac Miller before. When he released "K.I.D.S.," the mixtape that first caught most rap blogs' attention, in August 2010,...

  11. Tonight!: Wiz Khalifa and Snoop Dogg at 9:30 Club

    This surprise show, headlined by hip-hop's most popular potheads, sold out quickly, unsurprisingly. This year was Wiz's breakthrough year, scoring hits and Grammy nominations (two for "Black and Yellow," sorry Ravens fans) from his major-label debut, "Rolling Papers." And, well, Snoop is Snoop, a veteran who has transformed from a great rapper to a consistently OK rapper. On record together, they both sound charismatic and at home bragging about their weed habits and the like. The duo's film, "Mac and Devin Go to High School," doesn't have a release date but the soundtrack does &mdash; next Tuesday.&nbsp;

  13. Tonight!: Mac Miller at Rams Head Live

    Mac Miller, the rapper on the rise from Pittsburgh, brings his Blue Slide Park Tour to Rams Head Live tonight. If you're unfamiliar with Mac, here's what you need to know: He doesn't take himself too seriously ("goofy" might be an apt description), he's built a strong following among college kids (the kind that like to smoke weed and party ... so, all of them), he's released a handful of mixtapes ("K.I.D.S.," loosely based on the '90s film, is the strongest) and his hype is peaking at the right time (his first full-length album, also titled "Blue Slide Park" drops Nov. 8).

  15. July 18-24 in Baltimore nightlife: Wiz Khalifa, Gang Gang Dance, Heavy Seas beer dinner

    This week is a lot more low-key than last, but then again last week was pretty packed. It wasn't just because of Artscape. On Saturday alone, Cass McCombs gave a beautiful show at Golden West Cafe; Scottie B. killed at Metro Gallery, right after all the Artscape madness had ended; there was DYAO at Dionysus, and a tribute to Nina Hagen on the Charles St. bridge. Alas, there probably won't be anyone running around in "Blade Runner" costumes this week. What's happening: Wiz Khalifa and Gang Gang Dance are the best bets for the week; elsewhere there is Thank You, a beer dinner, and a couple of dance parties.

  19. Interview: Yelawolf turns the club upside down

    Compare Yelawolf to Eminem and you could miss the point. Sure, both are white rappers with chips on their shoulders and working-class backgrounds, but it's Yelawolf's power with the pen and his tenacity on the microphone that should be drawing the comparisons.

  21. Wiz Khalifa forms a stoned Voltron with Big Sean and Curren$y on 'Dot Dot Dot'

    Wiz Khalifa's Rolling Papers tour comes to Merriweather Post Pavilion Sunday afternoon (<a href="http://www.merriweathermusic.com/schedule/" target="_blank">tickets still available</a>), and his support is stacked with of-the-moment rappers such as Big K.R.I.T. and Mac Miller. Also on the bill are frequent Wiz collaborators and fellow weed enthusiasts Curren$y and Big Sean. The three &mdash; Wiz, Curren$y and Sean &mdash; have formed like a baked Voltron to create the stoned trinity of 2011 hip-hop, a supergroup of rappers with rabid fanbases and enough flows to put together a mixtape. Only Sean has hinted at an actual mixtape but the latest leak, "Dot Dot Dot," makes the project seem likely. "Dot Dot Dot" is perfect for a lazy, and for some, hazy Sunday drive to an outdoor concert venue. Just don't forget to keep an eye out for the cops.

  23. Trae the Truth's voice provides the low-end on 'Gettin' Paid'

    Posting this for any rap fans unfamiliar with Trae, a hometown hero from Houston, Texas. His voice, a gravelly but melodic bass (at least I think; haven't taken a music theory class since, well, ever), often commands whatever track he jumps on. He raps double-time on "Gettin' Paid" but his words are never muddled, a feat for an MC with a voice that low. He's a street rapper happy to stay in his lane ("Looking so clean on gator / Try to jack me? Guarentee I put the beam on haters / Hood n----"), with the only hints of pop aspirations being his choices of collaborations (Wiz Khalifa here, Rick Ross and Lil Wayne on other recent singles). There's not much to say about Wiz here -- he raps fine on it, filling space in the video with his skinny mean-mugging and clouds of weed smoke.
