1. L.A's Milk Carton Kids have entered the 'Promised Land'

Despite possessing a rather unassuming sound -- one built on gentle acoustic strumming and comforting harmonies -- local act the Milk Carton Kids have had a rather booming year and a half. Two self-released albums published straight-to-the-Web are said to have racked-up more than 130,000 downloads, and artists such as acoustic stars the Old Crow Medicine Show and the Punch Brothers have taken the Hotel Cafe regulars on tour.

  11. A Tribute to Woody Guthrie at The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown on Oct. 26

Woody Guthrie (pictured) was America's foremost Dust Bowl troubadour. He would have turned 100 this year. Guthrie's place in popular culture is secure; idolized by a young Bob Dylan, Guthrie sired a psychedelic-era successor in son Arlo (of Alice's Restaurant fame) and was revived a few years ago by Billy Bragg and Wilco, who began setting Woody's unused poems to new music. Now Thomas Jones, a Canadian musician, actor, mime, puppeter, improv artist and clown, performs as Guthrie in Woody Sed, an original 90-minute stage work playing for two nights at Middletown's Buttonwood Tree. Jones traces the arcs of Guthrie's life and music during the Great Depression.

  17. Midwestern lit: Plain-spoken

I recently took one of those online quizzes to test your accent, and it declared, accurately, that I come from the "Central U.S." The test said my accent is essentially no accent, the one that's employed by television news anchors, who are supposed to be from everywhere and nowhere at the same time.
