1. May 2: Beach House: Baltimore's biggest band turns its back on fame

When Beach House, the Baltimore dream-pop duo of Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally, released 2010's "Teen Dream," the band was immediately thrust into the forefront of the indie-music world. Pitchfork named it the fifth best album of the year; Rolling...

3. Review: Two Door Cinema Club at Virgin Mobile FreeFest 2011

Two Door Cinema Club lead singer Alex Trimble walked onto the FreeFest West stage at 1:45 p.m., swigging a Heineken. No water for him, and after a handful of songs from his band's debut LP Tourist History, it seemed appropriate -- he and his band were here to start a party.

The Baltimore Sun
This is the new home of Midnight Sun. The move to a new URL is part of a newsroom-wide switch to a new publishing system. Baltimore Diner has already done it, and so has Z on TV. Eventually, all of the paper's blogs will upgrade as well. Movable Type...

7. Allow me to introduce myself

What’s the point of a music critic? In my case, I’m sure of what it isn’t: it’s not to obnoxiously claim “FIRST!” on an obscure basement act nor is it to boorishly write off work because it’s “just not for me.” Like my favorite writers, I’m dedicated to music writing and criticism because I love getting dirty with the art — diving in headfirst, thinking not just bigger picture but also how powerful a single three-minute song can be. (Oh, and I enjoy the six-figure paychecks and beautiful groupies, obviously.)

18. Review: 'Under African Skies' revisits Paul Simon's 'Graceland'

When Paul Simon's seminal album "Graceland" landed in 1986 with its intoxicating African rhythms and critical acclaim, it also came tainted by the apartheid controversy already swirling around it. The excellent new documentary "Under African Skies" comes along like a bridge over those troubled waters, following Simon back to South Africa last summer for a 25-year reunion concert with the musicians who made the album and a sit-down with one of his chief anti-apartheid critics.
