In the months leading up to St. Patrick's Day each year, Patti Gifford sets about the task of helping area Irish-Americans like herself to celebrate their shared heritage.

Hundreds of yards of ribbon, cotton, thread and tasseled fringe — and lots of patience — are her tools.

The fruits of her labor are the custom-tailored sashes of emerald, white and orange that she creates to honor the tri-color flag of Ireland.

The ceremonial garb is worn in a show of patriotism and unity by the men and women of the Maryland chapters of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians in the annual St. Patrick Parade in Baltimore, set this year for...
