1. Snoop Dogg underwhelms with fun, but too-brief Rams Head Live show

It’s been a long time since Snoop Dogg’s career has been defined by his music. The 40-year-old rapper from Long Beach, Calif., exists in a rare pop-culture stratosphere where most of his headlines are garnered for decisions made outside of the recording booth. He’s directing porn (thanks, Hustler)! He’s a reality TV dad (“Snoop Dogg’s Father Hood”)! He’s been rechristened as Snoop Lion during a spiritual trip to Jamaica!

Chincoteague, Va. Pony Swim Experience one of Chincoteague's oldest traditions at the annual Pony Penning and Carnival. On Wednesday, watch Chincoteague's own "saltwater cowboys" herd the island's wild ponies across the Assateague Channel to the...

9. Coachella 2012: Snoop Dogg & Dr. Dre, The Black Keys, Santigold, and seven other must-watch acts

Just as winter begins to bum everyone out with its dropping temperatures and dark-by-4:30-p.m. routine, the newly liberated Coachella lineup has us daydreaming of spring and a weekend trip to the west coast. Seemingly every year, Coachella sets the standard for Important Music Festivals, and 2012 is no exception.

11. Tonight!: Wiz Khalifa and Snoop Dogg at 9:30 Club

This surprise show, headlined by hip-hop's most popular potheads, sold out quickly, unsurprisingly. This year was Wiz's breakthrough year, scoring hits and Grammy nominations (two for "Black and Yellow," sorry Ravens fans) from his major-label debut, "Rolling Papers." And, well, Snoop is Snoop, a veteran who has transformed from a great rapper to a consistently OK rapper. On record together, they both sound charismatic and at home bragging about their weed habits and the like. The duo's film, "Mac and Devin Go to High School," doesn't have a release date but the soundtrack does — next Tuesday.

Jason Winer was directing Julie Bowen on first episode of "Modern Family" when inspiration struck. "In the initial draft, Julie's character was described as mildly controlling and neurotic," Winer says of the suburban sitcom mom. "But what she didn't...

15. Charlie Wilson spans the R&B generation gap

Charlie Wilson has been alive for 58 years, and has been singing for nearly all of them — first in his church choir and then in the Gap Band, the pioneering funk group he formed at the age of 14 with his brothers Ronnie and Robert.

17. Chuck Brown just keeps on going

Chuck Brown will turn 75 this August. It's a benchmark the so-called Godfather of Go-Go never thought he would hit. He has been making music now for nearly 50 years. He has even outlived younger contemporaries, like poet and performer Gil Scott-Heron, who recently died.

21. Allow me to introduce myself

What’s the point of a music critic? In my case, I’m sure of what it isn’t: it’s not to obnoxiously claim “FIRST!” on an obscure basement act nor is it to boorishly write off work because it’s “just not for me.” Like my favorite writers, I’m dedicated to music writing and criticism because I love getting dirty with the art — diving in headfirst, thinking not just bigger picture but also how powerful a single three-minute song can be. (Oh, and I enjoy the six-figure paychecks and beautiful groupies, obviously.)

If Ice Cube's career is any indication, the life cycle of a rapper is highly unpredictable.
If Ice Cube's career is any indication, the life cycle of a rapper is highly unpredictable. One day you're protesting police brutality, and 20 years later you're playing cute for the "Ramona and Beezus" set. Still, his legacy as one of the pioneers of...
