Smashing Pumpkins (music group)

Highlights
Smashing Pumpkins (music group)

They began in the late 1980s at a Polish bar on the Northwest Side, two aspiring art-rockers in thrift-store paisley and black jeans, accompanied only by a drum machine, calling themselves the Smashing Pumpkins. When they played their first show as a four-piece band at Metro in Wrigleyville a few months later, their leader -- a tall, slouching guitarist named Billy Corgan -- was so nervous he was shaking. He and the band made $50 that night. But albums by the quartet -- Corgan, guitarist James Iha, drummer Jimmy Chamberlin and bassist D'Arcy Wretzky, who was replaced by Melissa Auf Der Maur -- went on to sell more than 22 million copies worldwide. Their 1995 release, "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness," was proclaimed album of the year by Time, Rolling Stone and Spin. They have won Grammy Awards and headlined the Lollapalooza rock festival in 1994. In 1998, they gave all the proceeds (more than $2 million) from their North American tour to charity. The Pumpkins first broke up in 2000. Corgan then released a solo record, formed and disbanded Zwan and then, with Chamberlin and other musicians, reformed the Pumpkins. « Show less

  5. October 17 - October 23 in nightlife: J. Cole, Double Dagger, Jackson Browne

The third Baltimore Beer Week came to a close Sunday. Over 300 tastings, homebrewing competitions and lectures were squeezed into the event's 11 days, sending thousands of beer lovers to bars in the city and the county. How did this year's event compare to last year's? Heavy Seas' Hugh Sisson had <a href="http://www.baltimoresun.com/entertainment/music/midnight-sun-blog/bs-ae-beer-week-preview-20110930,0,2870621.story" target="_self">said before the week started that one goal for 2011 was to spread out more events so that there would be more quality instead of just an abundance of stuff for fans to pick from. Were organizers successful? Are you happy bars will now "go back to being a beer bar, instead of a packed bingo parlor," as Baltimore Liquor Board chairman Stephan Fogleman has tweeted? This week, will be far more low-key. The major music story won't be happening in town, but in New York, where the CMJ Music Marathon will get underway Tuesday. In town: there are concerts by Jackson Browne, Double Dagger, and Ami Dang.
