  7. Autry Center welcomes Roy Rogers' first guitar to collection

    Culture Monster
It was Cincinnati, 1929, and the Slye family was struggling to make ends meet. To help out, 17-year-old Leonard Slye traded high school for a shoe factory job. Perhaps it was a youthful whim that led him to pay $20......

  11. Back Story: Who was Susan, and was she truly lazy?

    L.A. at Home
Americans tend to think Lazy Susans are kitschy relics of the 1950s and 1960s, but the lineage turns out to be longer and more distinguished. Historians can trace the concept to 18th century England, when it was probably known as a dumbwaiter....

  15. A haven for horse lovers within the city

Roy Rogers and Trigger would be proud. Orange Park Acres is a horse lover's dream, where equestrians set the pace for this little bit of serenity amid Orange's busy boulevards and strip shopping malls. It just doesn't get much more incongruous -- or unique in Orange County -- than this.

  17. Saddling up at a working cattle operation

THE HEIFERS are acting surly, but my horse pushes forward. My young crew of 10 or so cowpunchers encircles about 30 head of cattle on a wide pasture in the shadow of a sawtooth mountain just west of Bridgeport. Our horses slowly lead the cattle toward a gate at the far end of the field.

  19. U.S. Highway 395: California's 'mother road'

    Times Staff Writer
EVERY road sings its own tune. Route 66 is a classic, sometimes raucous ditty from Chicago to L.A.; Highway 1 a twisty ballad to the voluptuous California coast; and U.S. 395 a mandolin-driven ode to the West that evokes images of cowboy boots and...

  21. Rimrock Ranch fuses urban design with the rugged high desert

HERE IN the high desert north of Palm Springs, the tranquillity may be inspirational, but the elements can be harsh. Coping with 100-plus heat one month, flurries of snow in another can prove tough for residents in the cramped, wooden homes typical of the area -- some left from when this enclave was built as a film set for the westerns of Roy Rogers and Gene Autry.

  23. 'San Fernando Valley' Bing Crosby | 1944

FEW pop-culture figures resonated with American troops in World War II the way Bing Crosby did. He was a tireless figure on USO tours in Europe and when his rich, dignified baritone gave them "White Christmas" or "I'll Be Home for Christmas," the weary soldiers heard the sound of the home front and the promise of peacetime. So in 1944, when Crosby hit No. 1 with a jaunty song called "San Fernando Valley," it was no surprise that GIs heard it as a call to build their postwar lives in a new Eden out west.
