Virgin Music Festival

Tennessee has Bonnaroo, Texas has South by Southwest and California has Coachella. In 2006, Baltimore gained its own musical draw when Richard Branson chose Baltimore as the U.S. home for the Virgin Festival. About 40,000 fans converged onto Pimlico Race Course to hear music from national pop and rock acts such as The Who and Red Hot Chili Peppers. The following year the Virgin Music Festival became a two-day summer concert event, attracting about 70,000 fans. The lineup at Virgin Fest has included The Police, Velvet Revolver, Amy Winehouse, The Beastie Boys, Smashing Pumpkins and The Killers. Virgin Festival 2007 tickets did not sell out the 120,000 capacity, but Branson said he expects the festival to grow in the coming years. In addition to Virgin Festival Baltimore, Virgin Mobile also holds Virgin Festival Canada and VFest UK. « Show less

  5. City sits on sideline in NBA competition

The two news items from early and late Wednesday weren't exactly related, but they were more than coincidental. In the morning: a front-page story in The Sun about how The Relic on Howard Street (aka 1st Mariner Arena) still makes a decent profit. At night: a settlement that allows the NBA's SuperSonics to move from Seattle to Oklahoma City.

  7. Ad exec has flair for pushing green

    Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
Eric Ritz has a big meeting with executives at an action sports network, and he's all dressed up: His plaid shirt isn't tucked into his jeans, his dirty-blond hair pokes out from under his cap and most grandmothers would say he needs a shave. The Fuel TV...

  9. Preakness tips

    Sun Reporter
The Preakness has been run at Pimlico since 1873 -- except for a span between 1890 and 1908 -- but that doesn't mean organizers aren't willing to make changes. Many of last year's features will remain the same, but Maryland Jockey Club spokesman Mike...

  13. Q&A with musician Patterson Hood

This year has been a busy one for the Drive-By Truckers, who have been lauded by more than a few critics as America's "best hard rock band." In April, the rockers released A Blessing and a Curse, which continued a long trend of rave reviews that began with 2001's sprawling Southern Rock Opera. The band also toured as the opener for the Black Crowes this summer. Now they're headed to Baltimore's Virgin Festival before launching a fall tour of their own. Patterson Hood, one of the band's three musicians and songwriters, talked with Metromix about everything from Jack Daniel's to Gnarls Barkley.
