World-renowned entertainer Pearl Bailey was born in Newport News, Virginia, in 1918. She appeared in cafés, nightclubs, and theatres; recorded several albums and appeared in her first Broadway musical, "St. Louis Woman," in 1946 and her first film, "Variety Girl," in 1947. She won a Tony Award for the title role in the all-black production of Hello, Dolly! in 1968. She also provided voices for animations such as Tubby the Tuba in 1976 and Disney's The Fox and the Hound in 1981, in which she sang "The Best of Friends." She wrote three autobiographies, "The Raw Pearl," "Talking to Myself," and "Between You & Me."
