LONDON — The editor of Opera is worried.

5. Looking for opera inspiration

Like every other form of art, operas can be inspired by just about anything — historical events, myths, epic poems, plays, even movies. Often, such operas go on to eclipse their inspiration. Puccini's "Tosca," derived from a play by Victorien Sardou, is a good example; so is Verdi's "Rigoletto," based on a tragedy by Victor Hugo. But not all make that leap. Some remain in the shadow of their progenitors.

9. Classical music's spring brings festivals and much more

Spring is, as always, a season for festivals. The big one in Los Angeles this year is the ongoing celebration of the centenary of Benjamin Britten's birth, initiated by Los Angeles Opera. The Los Angeles Philharmonic's weeklong Brooklyn Festival in April is an investigation into how the New York City borough has become a hot spot for young composers. But while festivals take up a lot of the oxygen on the performing arts calendars, there is much else:

11. A loaded question for you: Are you happy?

The other day, somewhat on a whim, I walked around downtown Chicago for a while and stopped random strangers and asked if they were happy. I carried a notebook and identified myself as a reporter and wrote down what they said, and though I've done my share of man-on-the-street interviews, the off-putting baldness (and boldness) of the question made me skittish.

13. Today's classical music comes to Columbia

You can expect the music to sound fresh during the Leipzig String Quartet's concert on Saturday, March 2, at 8 p.m., in Howard Community College's Smith Theatre. Like the sponsoring Candlelight Concert Society, this chamber music quartet often likes to introduce audiences to contemporary classical music.

Paul Greenberg
It is customary now to go to a concert of classical music and hear ... a talk. The custom long ago spread to the Clinton Presidential Library here in Little Rock, unfortunately. That's where chamber music is regularly served up by a select group of the...
