1. Matt Frazao, Out of Your Head co-founder

Originally from West Hartford, Conn., Matt Frazao moved to Baltimore to attend The Peabody Conservatory, where he earned a degree in classical guitar performance. At the start of 2009, he co-founded the Out of Your Head music collective with bassist Adam Hopkins to help expand the creative music scene in Baltimore. Frazao, 31, now co-curates the series with Jon Birkholz, arranging for groups of musicians who have never rehearsed or played together before to perform sets of improvised, original music. Along the way, Frazao has been playing and recording with several other bands including Soul Cannon, Quartet Offensive and many more. This week, the Baltimore musician talks to b about wobble bass, delicious sandwiches and more.

  5. Free jazz concert series in Hollywood to include Poncho Sanchez

Not to be confused with an announcement that various ensembles will be covering Ornette Coleman's landmark "Free Jazz" recording (though that would be pretty spectacular), free jazz concerts will return to the elephant-adorned complex at Hollywood & Highland this summer for its ninth annual "Wine, Jazz and Moonlight" concert series.

  7. The Noah Preminger Quartet plays Collinsville's Bridge Street Live on May 6

<span style="font-size: medium;">For a relatively young jazz musician, tenor saxman Noah Preminger is as seasoned as it gets. As a leader and sideman, the 25-year-old Canton, Conn. native has gigged with some of the biggest names in New York, people like Dave Holland, Fred Hersch, Dave Douglas, Victor Lewis, John and Bucky Pizzarelli, Billy Drummond, Dave Liebman and others. He has two critically acclaimed albums under his belt, the most recent of which, 2011’s Before the Rain, was hailed as one last year’s best releases. The sky’s the limit in terms of where he goes from here.
