5. Freakwater spotlights mood and melody at the Hideout

Songs about broken vows, impoverished families and impending death aren't supposed to be pretty. Just don't tell Freakwater. Monday at a sold-out Hideout, the locally based band upended convention, filling tales of loss and hardship with gorgeous harmonies and homespun warmth. The alt-country group furthered its nontraditional approach by viewing bleak scenarios as opportunities for subtle humor. Indeed, having spent approximately half of the 90-minute show sharing amusing stories and cracking jokes, Freakwater mainstays Janet Beveridge Bean and Catherine Irwin might consider appearing on Chicago's famed comedy circuit.

9. Review: Graham Parker & the Rumour return to form at the Roxy

One of Graham Parker’s great choruses is his simplest. The British singer and songwriter delivered it near the end of a reunion set at the Roxy on Tuesday night with his razor-sharp band the Rumour. “Passion is no ordinary word,” sang Parker, 62, in a song of the same name, wearing his requisite indoor sunglasses and stretching toward the microphone. “Ain’t manufactured, or just another sound that you hear at night.”

21. Chris Cornell at Allentown Symphony Hall shows why grunge endures

Lehigh Valley Music
Grunge music, that angst-filled outlet of the 1990s, these years later can easily be regarded as overwrought and self-important. But those whose musical tastes grew up around it remain avid followers. And Chris Cornell, front man for two of the......
