1. Friday Buffet: The strange and sad demise of 38 Studios and Big Huge Games

On Thursday, the entire staffs of 38 Studios and Big Huge Games were given pink slips. The company, which released “Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning” (which <a href="http://www.baltimoresun.com/entertainment/bthesite/game-cache/bal-kingdoms-amalur-reckoning-review,0,4665859.story" target="_blank">I reviewed in February), was in partnership with the state of Rhode Island to bring jobs into the state and give former MLB pitcher Curt Schilling’s 38 Studios fuel to evolve into a big-time game developer. The company was in the midst of developing a project called “Copernicus,” an MMORPG based in the same universe as “Amalur.” Big Huge Games, based in Timonium, became a subsidiary of 38 Studios almost three years ago to the day.

  3. Generational nonsense at commencement time

This is the season of generational twaddle. At graduation ceremonies across the country, politicians, authors, actors and businessmen take to the stage to tell young people they are fantastic simply because they are young. This year, the ritual is more pathetic than usual because there's a presidential election in the offing. And because the current occupant of the White House won in 2008 in no small part due to his success with the "youth vote," he is desperate for them to repeat their blunder.

Michael Phelps has the money to pretty much sleep anywhere, in anything, that he wants. It turns out for the last year or so, the Olympian has been hitting the hay in a high-altitude sleeping chamber. Mention of the so-called "contraption" got a big...

  9. Did the Ravens get a late steal in Tommy Streeter?

Despite the uncertainty over who will be their third wide receiver this season, the Ravens waited until the final couple hours of the 2012 NFL draft weekend to address the wide receiver position. Late in the sixth round, the Ravens drafted Miami wide receiver Tommy Streeter. He was the 27th receiver drafted this year, but based on pre-draft rankings from several draft publications and websites, the Ravens got good value with the selection.

  11. Mike Preston: It doesn't matter how Suggs hurt his Achilles

There has been a lot of speculation that Ravens Pro Bowl outside linebacker Terrell Suggs injured his Achilles tendon while playing basketball. Suggs has denied that it happened that way, but who cares? If that tendon was tight and going to tear, it made no difference if he was playing basketball, wrestling, practicing karate or running sprints.

If Chaz Bono and Bristol Palin can dance — well then, so can you. Maybe not like a pro, maybe not well enough to make a living at it – it's a rare gift to be able to moonwalk like Michael Jackson or to twirl and shimmy like Stacy Keibler....

  15. 'Dancing with the Stars' recap: Week 3 performances

Week 3 and tonight's the first night I'll lament not hearing the announcer say "Navratilova" in that special way. And as if that's not sad-making enough, it's "their most memorable year" night. Hope your heartstrings are screwed in tight because they're going to be repeatedly tugged.
