Bakersfield country singer-songwriter Red Simpson, 78, has enjoyed a long, distinguished career. A key architect of Bakersfield's crackling, regional musical style, he's had his songs recorded by the biggest names in the business — Merle Haggard, Dwight Yoakam, Gram Parsons, Lucinda Williams, even Annette Funicello. WHAT: Singer-songwriter Mark Stuart received permission to use the band's irreverent name from the Man in Black himself when Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash started making music about 15 years ago. Some songs for the band's debut CD were recorded at Cash's home studio in Hendersonville, Tenn. As the name suggests, Stuart and his bandmates take Cash's traditional country sound and twist it into a hybrid that brushes against rock, folk and bluegrass. On tour, the band has performed on bills with Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, Willie Nelson, John Hiatt, Lucinda Williams, George Jones and Steve Earle.
