13. Journey's Schon Shocked By Perry's Silence

Journey's Neal Schon takes part in a question-answer session in Classic Rock Magazine No.176, on sale now. He says: “The last time I spoke to Steve Perry face-to-face was when we did the Hollywood Walk of Fame eight years ago. It was good – but there were so many reporters around, it had to be. To this day I don’t understand why we can’t just pick up the phone and talk.” Michael Bolton’s name came up as a replacement but was quickly dropped because Schon had previously recorded a track with the singer. “Michael was a little eccentric,”he reflects. “I played the solo in his version of Sittin’ On the Dock of the Bay, and Bolton made me re-do my solo about 200 times. Another former collaborator, vocalist John Waite, who worked with Schon in Bad English, said he’d rather “shoot himself” than regroup with Bad English. In the full interview he discusses the band’s battle to recover from Perry’s final departure and his $50m lawsuit over starting a relationship with reality TV star Michaele Salahi. 21. Film review: 'Rock of Ages' stewed in irony?

“Rock of Ages” is adapted from a stage musical that — in the manner of “Mamma Mia” and “Jersey Boys” — uses a story as an excuse to resurrect bygone hits with emotional resonance for an aging demographic. This is generally a debased subgenre, though (as my colleague Wade Major points out) one that also includes “Singin' in the Rain.” In the current case, however, the music isn't classic Tin Pan Alley, but rather ’80s power ballads and anthems from the likes of Twisted Sister, Journey, Pat Benatar and Foreigner.
