3. Jazz drummers vary the beat

In jazz, this is the era of the drummer. On a scene largely defined by the proliferation of creatively ambitious trap set experts, every year seems to bring a new crop of gifted rhythmic explorers. While steeped in jazz history, many of these musicians rove freely across stylistic frontiers, drawing from gospel, funk, folk, Balkan, Cuban and other deep musical wells.

  7. Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All is performing rap on its terms

Revolutions are still televised, but they get Tumblr'd, tweeted and YouTubed first. This one started last summer when music micro-bloggers began deifying a pack of nine skateboarding, freewheeling teenaged rap vandals from Los Angeles. Full name: Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All — or OFWGKTA if you're into brevity.

  10. Nick Digilio

Nick Digilio began reviewing movies on The Roy Leonard Show in 1985. He started as "the guy who likes bad movies" (reviewing Critters, Friday the 13th: A New Beginning, and the like). He studied at Columbia College and Roy saw him at a few screenings, talked to him and decided he'd be a good addition to his show. Eventually Nick became Roy's co-host on his Saturday morning movie review segment. Since the late '80s Nick has been a guy who gave an alternate opinion and sometimes a controversial view to the films and plays released. Soon, Nick became a staple on Roy's show and Steve King & Johnnie Putman's show as well as a guest on several WGN Radio programs. Now he hosts his own programs on Friday and Saturday nights where he talks about pop culture, current events, hot topics... and of course, reviews the new films.

Glendale is not exactly known as a jazz mecca. We do have Jax Bar & Grill and the occasional special event at local theaters. But now, if it's in the cards, we have one more option — Thursday nights at Notte Luna Italian and Mediterranean restaurant.
