1. Guitarist Kaki King's rightful place is among kings of the strings

Who is the greatest guitar player?
Who is the greatest guitar player? Depending on your age and musical tastes, the answer will vary. Eric Clapton, yes? Or, for those of a classical bent, perhaps Andres Segovia? How about, for you older folks, Les Paul or Django Reinhardt? Rolling...

3. Polish jazz blossoms at the Chopin Theatre

Jazz took root in Poland long ago – even before World War II – and the country has prized it ever since.
Jazz took root in Poland long ago – even before World War II – and the country has prized it ever since. If the music lived underground in the 1950s, when the Soviet Union considered it "decadent," Polish listeners – and their...

5. Rocker at the Gate: Shredder Tony Spada Gigs With the Hartford Symphony Orchestra

7. Dining Review: Bartaco in West Hartford Offers Good Stuff Served In Soft Corn Tortillas

Bartaco 971 Farmington Ave., West Hartford, (860) 586-TACO, bartaco.com When I say that the portions at Bartaco are small, I mean it as praise. (The taco prices are low, too!) I'm of the opinion that most restaurants serve us way too much food. Being...

**1/2 (out of 4) If you regularly read music press, you've heard about Gary Clark Jr. and his vintage sound. Regarding the Texas guitarist, the word "blues" gets thrown around a lot. You're going to see a lot of reviews where people call “Blak...

11. 'Funkin' With Electric Soul' takes on legends Jimi Hendrix, James Brown

You usually don't hear jazz singers taking on James Brown's "Sex Machine" or Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze."
You usually don't hear jazz singers taking on James Brown's "Sex Machine" or Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze." But one brave Chicago vocalist will be plunging headlong into this music Friday night, when the apparently fearless Dee Alexander takes the...

19. Hendrix's Dad Not A Fan Of Son's Singing

For millions of fans, Jimi Hendrix‘s musical legacy is beyond reproach — but he wasn’t above a little criticism from his father Al, who reportedly thought he would have been better off finding a different singer for the Experience. According to Jimi’s sister Janie, the younger Hendrix agreed with his father’s critical assessment of his vocals. “Jimi never thought he was much of a singer,” she shrugged in a recent interview with Music Radar. “My dad was a decent singer and he could be brutally honest. He would say, ‘You can’t sing, so it’s good you can play guitar.’” Of course, stressed Janie, that didn’t mean Al Hendrix was being unkind. “He was very supportive of him in the guitar arena, but he was just being honest,” she explained, and when Jimi’s turn for the spotlight arrived, father and son shared a lighthearted moment. “When Jimi was going to England he was all excited, telling my dad: ‘They’re putting a group behind me – I’m off to the big time,” recalled Janie. “I’m going to change the spelling of my name, and guess what? They want me to sing!’ “My dad was like, ‘Oh, goodness!’” continued Janie. “But Jimi said, ‘They’re all just hollering out there, so I’m gonna holler like the rest of them.’”

Glendale Pops subscribers probably don’t know the name or music of 30-year-old Miles Mosley, a bassist and composer who headlines Saturday with the Glendale Pops Orchestra at the Alex Theatre. The pairing is a departure for a series more likely to feature artists with identifiable histories that make for a pleasant date night.
