Formally known as the Chicago Blues Festival, Blues Fest began in 1984 with 165,000 people attending the three-day event held on one stage in Grant Park. It commemorated blues legend Muddy Waters, who had died the previous year. Promoted as the largest outdoor, free-admission blues festival in the world, it is sponsored by the City of Chicago and private donors. The event, which now is held on multiple stages, has grown to attract hundreds of thousands. Headliners have included Buddy Guy, Koko Taylor, John Lee Hooker, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley and Willie Dixon.
