3. Day two of the Fort Worth Music Festival was hot -- both onstage and off

Fort Worth Star-Telegram
Singer ZZ Ward perhaps put it best at the second day of the Fort Worth Music Festival Saturday afternoon. She said there was one advantage to it being so hot as well as windy: her fedora was sticking to her head. I guess she didn't have to worry about...

5. Foolproof Way to Remember Order of the Planets

I was at our schoool's Book Fair with Ben last week, sitting on the floor, reading him a clever book called The Three Little Aliens and the Big, Bad Robot. This take-off on the piggie-wolf classic features a trip around the solar system, punctuated by a big picture of all the planets. As I looked at this illustration, I started to sing the Planet Song from an episode of the Disney show "Little Einsteins" from probably seven years ago. My older son, Sam, LOVED that creative program and when Leo, Quincy, Annie and June sang about the order of the planets - to the tune of Beethoven's Fur Elise - he AND I both learned this important fact....and, honestly, when we're playing Trivial Pursuit or embarking on science projects, it is still how I remember this info today!

On a day when most of Connecticut can hardly imagine being at a sunny, outdoor music festival, the folks at Gathering of the Vibes offered us all a glimmer of sunshine: the 2013 lineup. And it's good.

9. Guys and dhols

Attired in a canary-yellow shirt, sequined slacks and a pharaoh's headdress, Sunny Jain beat a brisk tattoo on his two-sided dhol drum. Beaded and bewigged residents of New Orleans' Tremé and French Quarter neighborhoods danced and shouted along to the ecstatic music of Jain's Brooklyn-based brass-and-drums band, Red Baraat, who made their Mardi Gras debut in February. As captured on YouTube, one boy does his best to keep up with the frenzied beat, crazy-legging and pumping his arms. He excitedly jumps in the air at the song's finish.

15. The Go Guide Weekend Preview: This is not Del Boca Vista

It's been nearly 20 years since Jerry Seinfeld began visiting Del Boca Vista, the fictional South Florida retirement community where parents Morty and Helen battled crotchety neighbors, ate dinner at 4:30 p.m., didn't run their AC much and reaffirmed the region's place in the national consciousness.
