1. Coachella 2012: Snoop Dogg & Dr. Dre, The Black Keys, Santigold, and seven other must-watch acts

Just as winter begins to bum everyone out with its dropping temperatures and dark-by-4:30-p.m. routine, the newly liberated Coachella lineup has us daydreaming of spring and a weekend trip to the west coast. Seemingly every year, Coachella sets the standard for Important Music Festivals, and 2012 is no exception.

Michael Ian Black facetiously named his stand-up special "Very Famous" — but it's true, depending on whom you ask.
Michael Ian Black facetiously named his stand-up special "Very Famous" — but it's true, depending on whom you ask. Black, the snarky comedian best known for his pop-culture takedowns on VH1, is a cult-hero for his work on MTV's '90s sketch-comedy...

7. Charlie Wilson spans the R&B generation gap

Charlie Wilson has been alive for 58 years, and has been singing for nearly all of them — first in his church choir and then in the Gap Band, the pioneering funk group he formed at the age of 14 with his brothers Ronnie and Robert.

9. Album You Need: Kendrick Lamar's 'Section.80'

While the Internet salivated over an <a href="http://nahright.com/news/2011/07/04/kanye-west-jay-z-watch-the-throne-cover/" target="_blank">album cover (an album that has produced one song that was both terrible and forgettable), the best rap album of 2011 — thus far — had been available for purchase two days before. Kendrick Lamar quietly dropped Section.80 on iTunes late Friday night, and to sleep on it would be mistake. The West Coast rapper has gained blog traction thanks to a dexterous flow, but it's how he uses it that really inspires. With each song, Lamar challenges himself to not only tell a story, but to also attack the beat in ways lesser rappers simply wouldn't consider. He's a rapper's rapper like Outkast's Big Boi — the joy is in the execution, and the payoff is a finished product unmistakably their own. The big news surrounding Lamar is he's working with Dr. Dre on something called Detox, but his story is more interesting than a guest verse on a mythical project. Like many others, he's a proud, young black man finding his voice in America (a topic touched directly and indirectly all over Section.80), but he has a gift very few possess, and it comes across in his rhymes. Watch his video for Hiii Power, produced by J. Cole, below.

11. Allow me to introduce myself

What’s the point of a music critic? In my case, I’m sure of what it isn’t: it’s not to obnoxiously claim “FIRST!” on an obscure basement act nor is it to boorishly write off work because it’s “just not for me.” Like my favorite writers, I’m dedicated to music writing and criticism because I love getting dirty with the art — diving in headfirst, thinking not just bigger picture but also how powerful a single three-minute song can be. (Oh, and I enjoy the six-figure paychecks and beautiful groupies, obviously.)

17. Dilated Peoples tweaks its formula toward pop

Sun Pop Music Critic
You can call Dilated Peoples an underground act. But not for long. Over the years, the Los Angeles rap trio has amassed a solid following but nothing massive. Album sales have been healthy but unspectacular. DP has eschewed crunk-for-the-clubs hip-hop...
