Let's tip our hats to David Gildea, of Stevenson, for making "a very good trade."
Let's tip our hats to David Gildea, of Stevenson, for making "a very good trade." In 1989, when the Soviet Union preached perestroika, Gildea was one of 30 students at Washington and Lee University in Virginia who went on a school trip with a professor...

3. 'The Voice' recap: Instant eliminations

"The Voice" is shaking things up a little bit for the audience. Tonight, contestants were subjected to instant eliminations, and two solid shocks ensued … after blind auditions, battle rounds and the first live culling of team members, four artists remain on each of the coaches’ teams — but not for long.

5. 'The Voice' recap: Is the show making up the rules as it goes?

If Monday's “The Voice” was a night of shock but little awe, Tuesday night was a night of crappy filler and little justification.

12. Grammys 2012: Stay home if you're not Adele

Welcome to the Adele show. Just as she dominated radio this past year, Adele will likely walk away with a handful of shiny gramophones on Sunday night (8 p.m., WJZ/CBS). But this is show business - there are no guarantees (except that host LL Cool J will make us cringe at least 12 times). There will be performances, of course - Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, Nicki Minaj and even Adele, taking a stage for the first time since vocal cord surgery. And then there are the awards. Check out our breakdown of the four major categories, including predictions on who should and will win.

14. September 28: Turned up

Music we can't wait for Summer, you were a blast, but if we have to endure Pitbull's innocuous "Give Me Everything" or the pounding piano of Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" one more time, there could be blood in the streets. Luckily, fall has arrived...

16. 'The X-Factor' recap: A running diary of the first episode

THE SKINNY: Welcome to the world of "The X-Factor." From the start of Wednesday night's premiere, the "X" would take the foundations of "American Idol" — high drama, big lights and heartfelt stories — and build for the sky. This was an emotionally draining show, with stories of poor families, down-on-their-luck talents and even a meth-addict fresh out of rehab. If you feet that "Idol" has gotten stale in recent seasons (and it has, with its predictable guy-with-a-guitar winners), then "X-Factor" felt like a welcome reminder of just how great it feels to root for someone — someone perhaps trapped in a mundane life, just in need of the right break. It's the cliche American dream story, and you'd have to be pretty cold to roll your eyes at the way "The X-Factor" presents it. I'm feeling great after the first episode, so read my running diary to see how I got here:

20. 'The X-Factor' recap: Potential, not obvious talent, the key to getting through

THE SKINNY: More auditions. It was basically the same show as the first two, with more talent than the second but no where near what the first had. There was actual drama between the judges not agreeing on talent, and Fox wisely saved it for last. The thing to take away from Episode 3 was the judges were letting kids through even if they lacked the talent. They're looking for singers but also likeable personalities. Have the audience turn on you and you're of no use for the judges.
