13. Justin Timberlake's new album rooted in Chris Cornell's 'Scream'?

One of the key traits of Justin Timberlake’s new “The 20/20 Project” is its length. The majority of its songs run longer than seven minutes, adding both volume and density. Produced by Timbaland with his longtime collaborator Jerome “J-Roc” Harmon, the record’s big, bold songs suggest a nod to prog-rock epic-ness. It’s a notion that was confirmed during a recent conversation with Harmon, who has worked with Timbaland for nearly a decade, first as a keyboardist and now as one of his key co-producers.

  19. Soundgarden growls its way through fresh set at Riv

Nostalgia rarely surprises, but when it does, the past can again seem fresh. Tuesday at the first concert of a sold-out two-night stand at Riviera, Soundgarden briefly conjured the vibe of its formative Sub Pop era. Vocalist Chris Cornell jettisoned his guitar, got on all fours and growled. His mates followed, playing at a rapid clip and conveying menacing intent. For the duration of "Hunted Down," the Seattle-based quartet traveled back to 1988 when it had simple expectations and no mainstream aspirations. Not exactly typical for a group accustomed to filling arenas and headlining Lollapalooza.

  23. Soundgarden reunited, ready to see how it grows

Now that Chris Cornell thinks about it, maybe Soundgarden didn't have to break up in the first place. Maybe they could have taken a break, like other bands do all the time without even telling anybody. They could have made solo albums, taken long vacations, pretended everything was fine until it actually was fine.
