It is not common to hear a rapper, or a pop star or nearly any celebrity for that matter, instruct a sold-out crowd of thousands to “make some noise if you want to go to heaven.” No tongue-in-cheek wink and certainly no sarcasm — just wide-eyed, earnest hope.

That’s why it somehow works for Chance the Rapper, the prodigious 24-year-old star from Chicago. His popularity, evident from Tuesday’s opening notes of “Mixtape” until the Royal Farms Arena show ended roughly 90 minutes later, is a product of his immense talent, and a seemingly unshakable aura of positivity. It’s no exaggeration: The artist born Chancelor Bennett is anything but common.
