1. COLUMN: Solitary confinement comes with a price

Washington Post Writers Group
WASHINGTON -- "Zero Dark Thirty," a nominee for Sunday’s Oscar as Best Picture, reignited debate about whether the waterboarding of terrorism suspects was torture. This practice, which ended in 2003, was used on only three suspects. Meanwhile,...

5. The 'Argo' factor in this year's Oscar fest

In the week since Oscar nominations were announced, we've sat through two award shows — the Critics' Choice Awards, thrown by a group of junketeers who, according to Anne Hathaway at least, can't even spell the names of their winners right, and the Golden Globes, hosted by the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn., a wacky bunch of journalists whose news conferences require actors to pose for pictures with each and every member.

7. Camera Ready: Jessica Chastain zeros in on a style

When it comes to cultivating a red carpet identity, lead actress nominee Jessica Chastain hasn't exactly been consistent since she burst on the scene in 2011. Last year alone, she went minimalist-modern in coral Calvin Klein at Cannes, evil fairy godmother in a crinkled, corseted and crystal-embellished Louis Vuitton gown at the Met Ball, over-the-top baroque in a heavy, black-and-gold brocade Alexander McQueen gown at the Oscars and everything in between.

9. SAG Awards 2013: 'Argo' a go-go; Day-Lewis an Oscar frontrunner

"Argo" took home a single prize at the 19th Screen Actors Guild Awards Sunday night, but it was the one that mattered most. Winning the trophy for performance by a cast in a motion picture, Ben Affleck's CIA drama solidified its status as the front-runner in an Oscar race that had been muddled for weeks. Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" nabbed two of the top acting prizes: Daniel Day-Lewis was named lead actor for his performance as the 16th president, while Tommy Lee Jones was named actor in a supporting role for his portrayal of Rep. Thaddeus Stevens. But the film's momentum in the Oscar best picture race has been stalled by its SAG cast loss and by its defeat at the hands of "Argo" at Saturday night's Producers Guild Awards.

11. Now for real insight into Oscars -- by the guilds

The academy liked "Argo," but not its director, Ben Affleck. The Directors Guild of America nominated Affleck, but couldn't find room for "Silver Linings Playbook" auteur David O. Russell, who, naturally, received an Oscar nomination for direction. "Lincoln" won the most Oscar nods, but, now, in a post-Affleck-snub awards-season landscape, finds itself viewed by many pundits as an underdog, a movie admired more than adored.

13. The Gold Standard: Bet a penny on Day-Lewis as Lincoln?

"I am 10 years older than I was a year ago." We believe that's a line Abraham Lincoln said to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant at the end of "Lincoln." Or it could be something "Lincoln" lead Daniel Day-Lewis wearily muttered during one of the endless Q&As he's done during a long campaign of an altogether different sort than the one fought for the Union. What can we say? The lines are blurring at this point, though we're still fairly confident that the great Day-Lewis will put his own stamp on history next month, becoming the first actor to win three Oscars for a lead performance. An early snapshot of the four acting races:

21. Jessica Chastain's signature 'Zero Dark Thirty' line follows her [Video]

Daniel Day-Lewis may have been "clothed in immense power" in "Lincoln," but when it comes to memorable movie lines from the past year, it would be hard to top Jessica Chastain's forceful explanation of why she happens to be attending a particular CIA briefing in "Zero Dark Thirty."

23. DGA analysis: Unlike 'Apollo 13,' 'Argo' isn't coming back to earth
