1. Tom Cruise to star in 'Mission: Impossible 5'

The last time audiences saw super spy Ethan Hunt on screen in 2011, Lalo Schifrin’s iconic “Mission: Impossible” score seemed to be playing him toward the exit. Jeremy Renner’s William Brandt character had breathed new life into the franchise’s fourth installment, “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol,” leading to speculation that the “Hurt Locker” lead would take over the reins from star Tom Cruise.

5. 'Jack Reacher'

The driving force behind one action franchise with "Mission: Impossible," Tom Cruise aimed to launch another with this enjoyably tough melodrama centered around novelist Lee Child's title character, an ex-military man trying to determine whether a...

7. 'Jack the Giant Slayer' review: I miss Buffy

* (out of four)
* (out of four) Anna Faris stars in “Little Bo Peep: Wolf Exploder.” That sounds like a classic tale revision that would pick the right tone and actually deliver some fun. Until that movie actually exists, we’re left with “Jack...

9. 'Jack the Giant Slayer' director faced some towering challenges

When screenwriter Darren Lemke first proposed the idea of contemporizing the Jack and the Beanstalk fairy tale with CG technology, it was 2005. Tim Burton had not yet jumped into the rabbit hole with "Alice in Wonderland." Amanda Seyfried had yet to don the cape for "Red Riding Hood." Snow White had no Huntsman.

11. Phantom

Variety
The potential for screw-tightening suspense gets lost amid the ineffectual dramatics in "Phantom," a feeble fictionalization of a crucial but little-known moment when a rogue Soviet submarine brought the world to the brink of nuclear war. This latest...

13. 'Jack Reacher' review: Take notes, Tyler Perry

*** (out of four)
*** (out of four) Before learning about the tragedy in Newtown, Conn., I already was disturbed by a scene of “Jack Reacher” in which a sniper sets up five seemingly random people in his sights before killing them. The world only grows more...

17. Is Tom Cruise big enough to carry 'Jack Reacher'?

The opening minutes of the action-thriller "Jack Reacher" unfold with a display of gun violence that will be strikingly familiar to anyone who has been horrified by headline news in recent weeks. A sniper is shown assembling his long-range assault rifle. He then leans over a balustrade and goes about systematically assassinating innocent victims, seemingly at random, as they walk along a Pittsburgh riverfront.

19. MGM sets plans for IPO: Studio files draft registration statement with SEC

Variety
MGM, the fabled Hollywood studio that's made some folks piles of money and cost others their shirts, that's been in and out of the public market and Kirk Kerkorian's pocket for decades and that's had half a dozen CEOs in about as many years, is heading...

21. Film review: Brad Bird adds wit to 'Mission: Impossible'

“Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol” gallops into theaters almost exactly on schedule — its predecessors came out in 1996, 2000 and 2006 — and (more importantly) just in time to rescue Tom Cruise's flagging box-office numbers. Outside of his funny, if bizarre, guest spot in “Tropic Thunder,” his films since the last entry (“Lions for Lambs,” “Valkyrie” and the underrated “Knight and Day”) have all underperformed. The utterly enjoyable “M:I — GP” should fix all that.

23. 'Game of Thrones' star Carice van Houten on magic and Melisandre

Show Tracker
When a TV series crams horse beheadings, frozen zombies, dragons, sword fighting and naked prostitutes into nearly every episode, it’s hard for a single actor to make a grand impact. But actress Carice van Houten has done precisely that in the...
