  1. Columbia native's photo chosen for Ron Howard contest

On a whim, Dylan Singleton entered the Project Imaginat10n photography contest this fall. He found out earlier this month that one of his favorite musicians had selected his photo as a winner, but the 2009 graduate of Wilde Lake High School could only afford to be excited for a brief moment. Singleton was writing a 12-page final paper for a class at the University of Maryland, College Park, where he's a senior.

  7. Not 'Taken' with this sequel ★

"Taken 2" is so much lousier than need be, and its action sequences look as if they were put together by someone who doesn't know what he's doing. That's a problem. And not even the charismatically weather-beaten face and <em>basso profundo</em> action-star delivery of Liam Neeson can compensate.

  11. The Grey movie reviews

This week's featured adaptation is <a href="http://thegreythemovie.com/" target="_blank">"The Grey,"</a> a man-versus-nature thriller starring Liam Neeson. Inspired by the short story "Ghost Walker" by Ian Mackenzie Jeffers, who also helped with the screenplay, it's based on a simple, but terrifying, premise: An oil drilling team is stranded in Alaska after a plane crash and faces a pack of wolves. It sounds as grim and unrelenting as <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Into-Wild-Jon-Krakauer/dp/0385486804" target="_blank">"Into the Wild," </a>another book/movie that pitted man against the Alaskan wilderness. Here are some excerpts from reviews:

  15. 'Night Flight' still soars over today's movies

Vintage Hollywood movies were often belittled for taking liberties with history and glazing over the facts in their biographical dramas. But where are the upholders of truth when it comes to the current crop of American films? Movies by top-rank...

  17. Maryland gambling: A night at Hollywood Casino and Ocean Downs

On a recent Friday night, Hollywood Casino in Perryville whooped, shrieked and fluttered with the shrill din of thousands of slot machines at full blast. Crowds flitted from shiny penny slots to $1 machines, hoping to hit it big, or simply spend a night away from the couch.

Liam Neeson reinvented himself as an action star in "Taken," and this melodrama keeps him in that mode. He plays an attendee at a European conference whose trip is interrupted by his involvement in a car accident, putting him into a coma.
