  5. New year, new trends

Janus, the Roman god for whom the first month of the Gregorian calendar is named, has two heads — one looking forward to the future and another looking back to the past. That might make just him the most appropriate mascot for 2011's emerging trends — a simultaneous embrace of technology, such as 4-D and social networks, and a fascination with quainter notions, such as good customer service, ballet and royalty. What follows are some of the main trends we expect to see in the worlds of pop culture and style in the coming year.

  11. DVD pirates running rampant in China

Poking around a pirate DVD shop down the block from the Apple Store in central Beijing one recent afternoon on her lunch break, Zhou Xin eyed the floor-to-ceiling selection of Oscar-nominated films, indie flicks and B-movies such as "Nude Nuns With Big Guns" before grabbing a sleek copy of "Black Swan," complete with a blurb in English and Mandarin, for closer inspection.

  21. 'The King's Speech': Let the backlash begin

With Christopher Hitchens' essay in Slate exposing inaccuracies in "The King's Speech" and the newsreel uncovered by the History Channel showing King George VI stammering less severely than in the movie at a Scottish exhibition, the backlash against the beloved British film has begun. Regardless, the exposé of inaccuracies seems to be the curse of most biopics that vie for award recognition.
