  3. 'I'll Eat You Last' chronicles Sue Mengers' old Hollywood

A Hollywood striver in the 1970s would have learned oodles from Sue Mengers — how to woo a client, sass a studio exec, host a dinner party, smoke a joint. And, had she pulled up a seat in Mengers' Beverly Hills living room one particularly gloomy day in the agent's career in 1981, she would have learned how it feels when the town's warm winds suddenly blow cold.

  9. Oscars 2013: A tie for the sixth time in Oscar history

When Mark Wahlberg announced there was a tie in the category of sound editing, he had to first convince the crowd that it was not a joke or a continuation of the bit he was doing on the Oscar telecast with his animated co-star from the movie "Ted."

  11. Gripping return to the Lindbergh kidnapping

So many 20th-century murders were dubbed "The Crime of the Century" that erstwhile Chicago playwright-turned-Academy-Award-nominated screenwriter John Logan could have made a career from that carnival of mayhem alone — perhaps as a decade-by-decade, true-crime version of August Wilson's celebrated cycle of plays on the African-American experience. As it is, Logan (who won the Tony Award for "Red," his portrait of Mark Rothko, and more recently penned the screenplay for "Skyfall") first won local acclaim in 1986 with "Never the Sinner," based on the 1920s Leopold and Loeb case, followed the next year by his portrait of the German immigrant executed for the kidnapping and murder of the Lindbergh baby in the 1930s.

  13. Not-so-evil 'Dead': Is horror the new action?

People who offer their Monday-morning quarterback opinions in spaces like this -- yours truly included -- like to parse every number, every success or failure, for a larger meaning. And sometimes you have to look pretty hard to see a trend. Other times, like a possessed spirit in a dark forest, it just jumps out at you.
