Once upon a time — and by that we mean just a few months ago — it was the old-school horror genre that was being dusted off and repurposed into 21st century popular culture replete with wizards, werewolves, zombies and the hollow-cheeked vampires of the vanities.

3. Oscars 2012: An effort to be inclusive

With open arms, the Oscars welcomed diversity back to its ceremony, but the embrace turned out to be more awkward than warm. Last year's Academy Awards were roundly criticized by several observers for its notable lack of diversity. Actor Samuel L....

Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
First published on April 24, 2011. Revised and expanded in early 2012. The San Fernando Valley is 260 square miles of suburbia. Actually, make that suburbia on nutritional supplements. And antidepressants. With perhaps a little cosmetic surgery south...

9. Film review: The movie 'John Carter' is as forgettable as the title

When the Disney folks decided to drop the last two words from the title “John Carter of Mars,” they were left with the blandest, least informative name of any big-budget film in living memory. Sure, “Shrek” and “Forrest Gump” were equally uninformative, but at least they sounded unusual. “John Carter,” on the other hand, is one iota more distinctive than (the nonexistent) Jack Smith or Jim Johnson. There's a reason Spielberg and Lucas gave Prof. Hank Jones a colorful nickname.
