1. A reflection on the merits of the historical novel vs. the historical film

Although there will presumably be no hoop skirts or beaver-skin top hats on the red carpet, this year's Academy Awards are putting a spotlight on American history. I've spent years studying, writing and teaching about the fight to end slavery, so I was excited when Steven Spielberg and Tony Kushner brought that history to the screen in the Oscar-nominated “Lincoln.” But for all the glamour of a cinematic blockbuster, watching a film like “Lincoln” reminds me that the novel as a literary form has distinct advantages when it comes to deepening how Americans today understand our history.

  3. Commentary: Sorry, but 'Argo' shouldn't win best picture Oscar

Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of "Argo." I've seen it twice, enjoyed it mightily both times, and put it on my 10-best list, where it belongs. I called it "a smart, complex and engaging film that crackles with energy and purpose," and I stand by those words.

  5. Oscar predictions: Vegas lays odds, and the best bet goes to ...

Are you feeling certain, like most, that Daniel Day-Lewis is going to win the lead actor Oscar on Sunday for his title turn in "Lincoln"? If you want to put some money behind that belief, you can, but, given his sure-shot status, you'd better be prepared to wager a bundle to make a pittance.

  7. 'United in Anger': Documentary explores history of AIDS fight ★★★

We've arrived at a rich and instructive political moment. The president and his adversaries continue to negotiate an uneasy driving lesson to avoid plunging off the fiscal cliff while saving face. Moviegoers are turning out in heartening numbers for Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln," which sacrifices chronological breadth (the film covers only a few months in the life of the 16th president) for a terrifically observed examination of Lincoln's political wiles, and how they were consistently underestimated by those who liked slavery just the way it was.

  9. TV review: 'Killing Lincoln' all over again

America's fascination with Abraham Lincoln seems nearly limitless--Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" is an Oscar favorite, Doris Kearns Goodwin's 2005 book "Team of Rivals," on which Spielberg's film is partly based, remains on the New York Times bestseller list, where Bill O'Reilly's "Killing Lincoln" is currently No. 8.

  17. Oscars 2013: 'Argo' generates most heat, but can 'Lincoln' catch it?

With the Oscars finally upon us Sunday, it's do-or-die for the movies ranked in the L.A. Times Data Desk's HeatMeter, which tallies points at events throughout the season to gauge the overall traction of people and films. With Ben Affleck's "Argo" piling up the wins, it's taken the lead in the overall film race (which incorporates all wins for a movie, and for everyone from directors to actors to cinematographers).

  19. Clothes that tell stories

The year 2012 was full of films that captured the essence of memorable time periods through costume. Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" was brought to life by designer Joanna Johnston's stovepipe hats and wool shawls, for instance. And what would the film "Anna Karenina" be without costume designer Jacqueline Durran's lavish bustle-back gowns?

  21. Critic's Notebook: Movie violence must not be stopped

I abhor violence. As a rookie police reporter years ago I saw the damage guns, knives, broken bottles, metal pipes, hands — humans — can inflict. From the terrifyingly premeditated to the unfortunately accidental, those images still have the power to shake me to the core. They will never leave me.

  23. The 'Argo' factor in this year's Oscar fest

In the week since Oscar nominations were announced, we've sat through two award shows — the Critics' Choice Awards, thrown by a group of junketeers who, according to Anne Hathaway at least, can't even spell the names of their winners right, and the Golden Globes, hosted by the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn., a wacky bunch of journalists whose news conferences require actors to pose for pictures with each and every member.
