1. Crashing the Oscars

The Oscars are serious — important people making important, relevant, thought-provoking movies about race, marital relations, horses and Owen Wilson seeing dead Parisians. The dresses and jewelry are beyond fancy. The tuxes are bespoke. Sidney...

  5. Oscars 2012: Waiting for the excitement

<h6 class="uiStreamMessage" data-ft="{"type":1}">Am backstage at the Oscars, waiting for the winners to come back and start saying something entertaining. Got to have a quick word with Baltimore's own Stacy Keibler as she walked the red carpet. Octavia Spencer's acceptance was wonderfully emotional; be interesting to hear what she has to say. So far, "Hugo" seems to be doing really well, but here's betting it's about done for the evening. And now, we get to watch Cirque du Soleil nearly decapitate people. Never a dull moment...

Apparently, they won't be bringing the major winners, like Spencer, backstage until the end of the show. 7. Top films of 2011 go back in time, and many find success

The very best movies of the past year went back to the earliest years of cinema for their subject matter, but 100 or so years amount to just a few film frames when you consider that some of the other movies in this 10-best list went back to the dawn of time for their stories.

  9. 'Hugo': Giving cinema's birth a welcome rewinder

Martin Scorsese has made so many provocative movies over the decades that probably the only way left for him to shock an audience was to make a children's film. Yes, "Hugo" is rated PG. It's also in 3-D, meaning that this Christmas release delivers the dazzling special effects now expected in a big-budget movie.

  22. Movie review: 'The Dictator' rules with crudeness and smarts

Like its creator and star Sacha Baron Cohen, the comedy of "The Dictator" is mercurial to the extreme and as crude as the massive oil reserves of Wadiya, the fictional North African nation where his latest movie prank begins. By turns hysterical, heretical, guilty, innocent, silly, sophisticated, teasing and tedious, the film follows the power-mad leader Admiral General Haffaz Aladeen as he loses his bearings, his beard and his heart in New York City.
