Christian Bale

Highlights
Christian Bale

Actor Christian Bale made his critically acclaimed film debut in Steven Spielberg's "Empire of the Sun."

His breakout role came in 2000 with "American Psycho." Bale played a yuppie serial killer.

Bale is known for his ability to completely transform his body for a role. He lost about 60 pounds to play the lead role in 2004's "The Machinist," and then immediately bulked up for 2005's "Batman Begins."

Off-screen, Bale has become known for his temper. In 2008, he faced assault allegations from his mother and sister. The charges were dropped. Then in 2009, an audio clip from the set of "Terminator Salvation" surfaced, featuring a profanity-laced outburst from Bale.

  1. Baltimore Comic-Con 2011: DC Comics bets on 'New 52'

Jeremy Adams has two parties planned for his Federal Hill comics store this month. One will celebrate this weekend's annual convergence of the comics world on Charm City. The other will anticipate a risky, game-changing strategy that could determine the shape — and vitality — of that world for years to come.

  9. No joke: Batman's latest plods toward predictability

    (C) <span class="dropcap_large">The Dark Knight is a handsome, accomplished piece of work, but it drove me from absorption to excruciation within 20 minutes, and then it went on for two hours more. It's the standard-bearer for the school of comic-book movies that confuses pompousness with seriousness and popular mechanics for drama. It's scaled to be an urban epic about the deterioration of hope and possibility in Batman's hometown, Gotham City (standing in for all Western cities), but there isn't a single stirring or inspired moment in it.
