Christian Bale

Highlights
Christian Bale

Actor Christian Bale made his critically acclaimed film debut in Steven Spielberg's "Empire of the Sun."

His breakout role came in 2000 with "American Psycho." Bale played a yuppie serial killer.

Bale is known for his ability to completely transform his body for a role. He lost about 60 pounds to play the lead role in 2004's "The Machinist," and then immediately bulked up for 2005's "Batman Begins."

Off-screen, Bale has become known for his temper. In 2008, he faced assault allegations from his mother and sister. The charges were dropped. Then in 2009, an audio clip from the set of "Terminator Salvation" surfaced, featuring a profanity-laced outburst from Bale.

  9. Sam Worthington is human under the technology in 'Avatar'

Forget the flying dragons and giant blue aliens, Sam Worthington is in search of human life amid all that extraterrestrial spectacle in "Avatar." Director James Cameron's sci-fi epic arrives Dec. 18 amid intense discussion of its state-of-the-art performance capture and 3-D innovations, but for Worthington, the 33-year-old Australian star of the film, none of that is as important as locating the human heart in the story.

  17. Depp unleashes inner outlaw in 'Public Enemies'

<img src="http://www.baltimoresun.com/media/photo/2009-07/48258211.jpg"> Public Enemies provides a welcome shock to the system. This tough-minded, visually electric movie about Great Depression bank robber John Dillinger ( Johnny Depp) takes audiences into the center of the action in its opening minutes. It keeps them there as it expands into a bristling chronicle of a country in flux. Without ever telling viewers what to think or how to feel, it raises more questions about the corruption of crime and crime fighting than any expose or thesis. And if it sometimes registers too coolly, by the end it rouses more bruised feelings than any four-hankie weepie.
