  1. Oscar Nominations for 2012

All my friends think I wake up early for the Oscar nominations. It’s baffling how little they know me. I love nothing more in life than sleeping in. And why wake up early to pull an Elvis and shoot the TV screen at the idiotic nominations that always end up irking me?

  6. Sketchfest's return unearths more comedy gold

Much as we like to boast about Chicago's long roster of homegrown comedic talents (insert meaningful nod in the direction of Tina Fey and Stephen Colbert), audiences can sometimes forget how deep the local bench is at any given moment. But then every January, the Chicago Sketch Comedy Festival, which continues through Sunday, comes barreling into the new year on a wave of good vibes and damn-the-torpedoes energy. We all need a reminder of the quality of not-yet-name-brand talent that's out there right now, and the fest consistently delivers. And at an affordable price, no less.

  18. 'Artist,' Scorsese's 'Hugo' shine brightest in 2012 Oscar nominations

    Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences paid homage this year to the early days of cinema by bestowing the lion's share of Oscar nominations on two films that are valentines to the early days of cinema. "Hugo," Martin Scorsese's heartfelt love...

  20. Reel Critics: Some of year's best movies not recognized as nominees

Nine films were nominated for Best Picture at this year's Academy Awards, but I think only my top three picks below have a real chance of winning. They're included here with some other movies that I think also deserved recognition:
