'Roots': New version debuts Memorial Day

The new TV adaptation of "Roots" will start on Memorial Day and air at 9 p.m. four consecutive nights, History announced Thursday. 

The eight-hour series will be simulcast on History, A&E and Lifetime.

The first version of Alex Haley's novel, which aired on ABC in 1977, became a national phenomenon. Ask anyone who saw it.

The story tells of one African-American family over generations and how it survived through the horrors of slavery. The first TV version featured stunning performances by John Amos as the adult Kunta Kinte, Louis Gossett Jr. as Fiddler, Leslie Uggams as Kizzy and Ben Vereen as Chicken George.
