  1. This crowd-pleasing musical about love certainly hasn't changed

Just as people in longtime relationships need to find ways to rejuvenate the romance, so too do cute musicals about dating, love and marriage. Especially when they seem caught in the amber of the mid-1990s. (Video dating? Really?) Not to mention 1950s gender roles. (Guys sure do become alpha-males behind the wheel!)

  7. "South Pacific" at the Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire ★★★½

By all means enjoy her hapless attempts to shampoo a man out of her hair. But if you fall totally in love with Ensign Nellie Forbush, then you're not watching the right "South Pacific." As Oscar Hammerstein II wrote, in that disarmingly simple lyric, "You've got to be taught to hate and fear." And Nellie was very much the willing recipient of that lesson.

  11. 'The Whale' and other big fish to check out right now

April can be the cruelest or the kindest month for a critic, but it most certainly is the busiest month in the Chicago theater. Over the last 30 days, I've seen about 30 shows in Chicago and New York. I'm gonna get right to the point here; there are more reviews to write.

  13. After a rough start, Andrew Lloyd Webber revue shines

THEATER REVIEW: 'Now and Forever' at the Marriott Theatre ★★★ ... At the start - the rough start - of "Now & Forever," the throbbing electronic tones of "The Phantom of the Opera" fill the theater as colored lights flash repetitively on a chandelier sitting on the stage.

  15. 12-year-old from Naperville follows dream to Broadway

While a number of aspiring actors rise from community theater to bigger stages around Chicago, it's rare for a 12-year-old to make the leap to Broadway in New York City.

  19. 'Dreamgirls' offers life, trauma and anthems for after Labor Day

THEATER REVIEW: "Dreamgirls" at Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire ★★★ ... If you've overdosed on sunscreen, the arrival of the ice-cool "Dreamgirls" is a fine way to kick off the fall theatrical season.
If you've overdosed on sunscreen, shorts, sweat and sand, the arrival of the ice-cool “Dreamgirls,” those begowned, bewigged and beguiling divas who've sexily slinked and seductively shimmied across American stages for the past 30 years,...

  21. A very full load of nominees for this year's Equity Jeff Awards

Apparently confronted by a plethora of riches in the past season of Chicago theater, the Joseph Jefferson Awards Committee offered up not the traditional four or five nominees one finds at the Tony Awards, for instance, but a bevy of nominees for its annual awards. In the case of best Equity production in Chicago last year, the committee came up a whopping 18 nominees, divided between "large" and "midsized" companies. And that doesn't even include the musicals.

  23. 'Iceman Cometh,' 'Follies' big Jeff Award winners

Two of the most accomplished productions in the history of Chicago theater — "Follies" at Chicago Shakespeare Theater and "The Iceman Cometh" at the Goodman Theatre — shared top honors at the Joseph Jefferson Awards, presented Monday night at the packed Drury Lane Theatre. The six Jeffs for "Iceman" (including a best-director Jeff for Robert Falls and a best-supporting actor nod for Brian Dennehy, even though this was a role far bigger than most leads) ended the Goodman's recent drought at the annual awards honoring the best Equity-affiliated Chicago theater.
