5. 'Welcome to the Punch' review: A weak imitation of the average

*1/2 (out of four)
*1/2 (out of four) For a B-movie about street fighting, titles don’t get much better than “Welcome to the Punch.” Unless you call your movie, I don’t know, “The Time Your Balls Met My Foot.” Sadly, the Punch is just a...

7. Generic cop film stands out because of its accents ★★

Take away the British actors, accents and settings, and "Welcome to the Punch" would still be a perfectly serviceable if utterly generic cop thriller.

11. 'Zero Dark Thirty' nails it

You know the beginning and you know the end, but it's the way director Kathryn Bigelow tells the middle in her riveting movie "Zero Dark Thirty" that amazed me.

13. 'Zero Dark Thirty' review: The year's superior true-war story

***1/2 (out of four)
***1/2 (out of four) And that’ll do it for “Argo.” Ben Affleck’s widely praised Oscar contender is plenty entertaining, but its sense of place and investigative detail don’t come within miles of the immersive power of...

23. 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy' plays close to the vest – 4 stars

Actors so rarely get paid to sit still. This week at the movies, as Tom Cruise is on Imax screens playing a frantic, hamsterlike intelligence gatherer in the new "Mission: Impossible" movie, we have also a superb adaptation of the John le Carre spy novel "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy." Its central character, George Smiley of the British Secret Intelligence Service, does not smile much, or give anything away. He sits. And watches. And waits for his adversaries, one of whom is a double agent working for the Soviets as well as the British, to make a fatal mistake.
